" Variations on Recent Themes and Turquoise” Antonia McGuane

This exhibition includes
work from two different series: The drawings
in charcoal and pastel are from a series titled
"Variations on recent
themes and turquoise". As with music composition, “Variations on a
theme” involves new arrangements of existing themes. Part of these
arrangements is based on sketches of the Castellers. |

While I was
at Jiwar Creation & Society artist residency in
Gracia I had the opportunity to sketch the Castellers de Ville de Gracia
during their practice sessions. This was a very special opportunity and as
well as the work in this exhibition, the sketches also became a reference for
paintings titled "Ephemeral" which can be seen on my blog. |

The paintings are part of a
body of work completed at Can Serrat Artist
Residency, El Bruc, Barcelona.
This is a wonderful quiet location, at the foot of Montserrat, surrounded by olive
groves, with a
spectacular view of the mountain.

The paintings are titled "An end to a robbery". A few
months before going to Can Serrat I had been robbed
in Barcelona and lost the reference material I had intended to use in my
art project. So, these paintings represent the new work done at that
time. |

I am an Irish/Canadian artist living in
Vilassar de Mar. I studied at the Limerick School
of Art, Ireland and De Vrij Adademy,
The Hague Holland. For many years, I
have lived and exhibited my art work in Nova Scotia, Canada. In the past
few years I have been at artist residencies, Fundacion
Valparaiso, Mojacar, Almeria, Jiwar
Creation & Society, Gracia, Barcelona and Can Serrat International artist residency, El Bruc, Barcelona, all of which have been very positive
